1. The Venice International Film Festival was founded by an Italian businessman and politician, Giuseppe Volpi. Venice Film Festival is not only one of the most prestigious, but also the oldest film festival in the world, debuting on August 6th,1932. The very first film shown at the festival was Rouben Mamoulian's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931). The festival will be held in September on the island of Lido. The screenings will take place at the notorious Palazzo del Cinema on Lungomare Marconi. In 2025, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein premiered at the festival earning five nominations at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards. (News, History)

2. Sundance Film Festival was founded in August 1978. Cinema legend and political activist Robert Redford founded the Sundance Institute in 1981, the same year the Sundance Film Festival moved their event to January as an effort to attract ski tourists. It was not until 1985, when Sundance Institute gained creative and administrative control and expanded the festival to a ten day event. Sundance Institute’s mission states to “foster independence, risk-taking, and new voices in American film”. Some notable films that debuted at Sundance Film Festival  include, Before Sunrise (1995), American Psycho (2000), & Ryan Coogler’s Fruitvale Station (2013). (Sundance, IndieWire 

3. On August 1, 1973 the classic coming of age film, American Graffiti, was released. Written and directed by George Lucas before the success of his Star Wars franchise. Lucas was challenged by friend and colleague, Francis Ford Coppola, to step out of his comfort-zone and make a movie that aligned more with his warm and funny personality. Harrison Ford, who was working as a carpenter at the time, was cast as the character, Bob Falfa. His only requirement was to not cut his hair. Ford would later go on to star as Han Solo in the Star Wars franchise. (MentalFloss)
